Basketry - Thinking Outside the Basket with Brooke Munro

An exploration into raffia basketry and artistry. - Suitable for all levels

  • Description

    Perfect for beginners through to the more experience maker, you will learn and practice many aspects of basket making and artistry with both traditional and explorative techniques. Our focus will be to create forms that are unique, with flare and personality.

    Some of the techniques we will be covering include:

    - Coiling

    - Cordage and string making

    - Plaiting

    - Twining

    - Cobbling

    We will be using natural Madagascan raffia dyed in an array of colours. You will have the opportunity to work on the one piece (basket or artwork) or many pieces during the week. All raffia and tools used over the Summer School will be included with the option of purchasing extra to take home.

Christmas Wreath Workshop - Sunday 3 December

It’s that time of year, let us deck the halls together!

There is something very special about a handmade and decorated wreath at Christmas.

Don’t buy plastic- it’s nasty stuff. Craft you own from curated materials, found and foraged

objects as well as garden produce.

Let’s create a wreath to hang at your hearth, front door or as a table centrepiece – I’ll teach you

the art of making and designing a festive garland to bring joy to the season. You will also learn to

make decorations for your tree and festive pieces for the table (or as gifts).

During the class you will enjoy:

 A share platter of treats, sweet and savoury

 endless tea and coffee

 a glass of prosecco

You will learn to:

 construct a base from vine for your wreath 

 decorate your wreath from locally sourced plant materials including native and

introduced species. These include materials such as pine, rosemary, bay, banksia,

casuarina, kangaroo paw, dried citrus, just to name a few.

 craft your own Christmas tree ornaments

The class runs from 10am to 1pm.

Spend a delightful morning with Brooke Munro leaning an introduction to the art of basketry coiling.
In this class Brooke will be demonstrating varied techniques and will be hands on when teaching a variety of stitches and wrapping styles. You will have an endless supply of Mr & Mrs Munro's hand dyed raffia, which is well renown and sold globally.
This class is perfect for beginners through to the more experience maker, you will learn and practise many aspects of basket making with both traditional and explorative techniques.

The class will be held in the creative space of Made By Me Workshop in St Peters, where you'll be surrounded by inspiration and fueled with yummy snacks. The atmosphere is relaxed and supportive, making it the perfect setting to explore your creativity. Join us for this exciting workshop and take the first step in your basketry journey. Expand your skills, create something unique, and discover the joy of working with your hands.

ABOUT BROOKE

Brooke is a Southern Highlands Sculptural Textiles Artist raised in Burrawang NSW. She studied a Bachelor of Creative Arts at
Wollongong University where she was under the tuition of textiles artist Virginia Kaiser.
She currently runs a small creative business with her husband called ‘Mr and Mrs Munro’ which has been featured in national publications including Country Style, Home Beautiful and Belle Magazine. Brooke exhibits her sculpture regularly and draws inspiration from nature, femininity and traditional craft.

Being creative has so many positive benefits and we have seen so often in a Brooke Munro class, the increased level of happiness and the deep satisfaction for the inspiration found for various aspects of our lives.  Brooke is an incredible teacher and artist and to spend a few hours with her is always enjoyable and fun.  

Random weave basketry is the art of using differing fibres and found objects and weaving them with a structural technique to create an organic form. Brooke will demonstrate varied techniques and will provide hands-on teaching with differing fibres and shapes. It’s such a versatile technique that allows you to make stunning baskets and sculptural forms and Brooke will help you create a form made from locally sourced plant materials, including willow.

All materials and tools for this class will be supplied and included in the ticket price.

Its the perfect class for a mum and daughter or a bunch of friends to come together and spend a few hours creating, talking, learning and having a bit of fun with one of our best local and regional artists. You can book both of Brooke's classes at a discounted offer when you go to bookings.

Southern Highlands Raffia Retreat at Moonacres School

Get away to the Southern Highlands for our two-day Raffia Retreat with Brooke Munro. A chance to wind down, rug up by the fire with like-minded souls, and immerse yourself in the world of basketry!

Perfect for beginners through to the more experienced maker. Over two days with Brooke you will learn and practise many aspects of basket making with both traditional and explorative techniques.

Some of the techniques Brooke will cover across the two days include:

  • Cordage and String making

  • Coiling

  • Plaiting

  • Twining

  • Cobbling

We will be using natural Madagascan raffia dyed in an array of colours. All raffia and tools used in the two-day retreat will be included in your ticket price with the option of purchasing extra to take home at the end of the weekend.

With an intimate sized group of students you will have expert and one-on-one tuition with Brooke.

You will have the opportunity to work on one single piece (whether it be a basket or artwork) or many pieces over the two days. 

Our beautiful space at Mooonacres School allows for a relaxing retreat, where you will enjoy delicious Moonacres fare, including morning and afternoon teas and lunch on both days, with a glass of bubbles in the afternoon. The fire will keep us cosy as we work and watch the world go by in Robertson.

The class begins on Saturday at 9.30am for 10am and runs to 4pm.

On Sunday we start at 10am and finish at 4pm.

Mrs Brooke Munro's RAFFIA RETREAT WEEKEND

'Basketry Immersion'

Mrs Brooke Munro is considered one of the great basket weavers in Australia and this weekend will be a perfect opportunity for beginners or the more experienced maker to immerse themselves in raffia basketry and art.

We will learn and practise many aspects of basket making, including traditional and explorative.

Brooke will cover Cordage & String Making; Coiling; Plaiting; Twining and Cobbling.

We will use natural high quality Madagascan raffia, dyed in a variety of colours.

You will have the opportunity to work on the one large piece, be it basket or artwork or many pieces over the course of the two days.

The weekend includes as much tea, coffee and cake as you'd like and a delicious lunch sourced from the MRR kitchen garden, washed down with a glass of champagne each day.

Accommodation is available in our guesthouses, but is limited so get in quick and treat yourself or get a group of friends together.

This workshop is for the little people! An after school activity like no other -  to prepare for your entry in the Robertson Show. We are so excited that the Robertson Show can go ahead this year, and we want to celebrate that with our youngest locals.

On Wednesday 9th March we will be welcoming our young local creatives to Moonacres School for an afternoon of sculpting with veggies and potatoes just in time for the Robertson Show.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo will be our inspiration as we let the creativity of the young go wild.

Local Veggies and produce from Moonacres Farm and Robertson Potatoes.

The class fee will go towards the cost of produce and afternoon tea.

Spend the morning with Brooke, for an introduction to the art of basketry coiling. In this special class Brooke will introduce you to different soft plant materials, including commonly found local plants, weeds and vegetables from Moonacres Farm. Brooke will demonstrate how to harvest, prepare, store and use them for the purpose of making fibres for basketry.

All tools and materials for this class will be supplied and included in the ticket price.

During the class you will enjoy:

Afternoon tea from Moonacres Kitchen with Tea, Coffee and/or a glass of Prosecco

In this class you will learn:

  • how to harvest, prepare and store plant fibres for basketry

Get weaving with Brooke Munro this Easter and make a beautiful fresh willow basket using a Random Weave technique. Great for collecting and foraging, and perfect for the kids on their Easter egg hunt!

This basket will be constructed using a Random Weave technique and include the construction of a sturdy handle for carrying ample amounts of Easter Eggs. These very special Easter Baskets will be made from locally sourced willow and will look fantastic all year round.  

All materials and tools for this class will be supplied and included in the ticket price.

During the class you will enjoy:

Morning tea pastry and Easter treats from Moonacres Kitchen with Tea/Coffee and a celebratory glass of bubbles.

In this class you will learn:

  • how to weave with willow

  • to weave using Random weave technique

  • a range of tips from Brooke to develop your knowledge of techniques and the use of plant fibres

The class runs for 4 hours from 9am to 1pm or 2pm to 6pm - choose your preferred session at check out.

Come and make it more wonderful and create your own Christmas Decorations using Basketry techniques with Natural Madagascan Raffia. (It’s definitely time we moved away from plastics)

Spend the afternoon learning an introduction to basketry coiling, string and pom pom making with Brooke Munro.

These techniques will help you adorn your tree, your house and lift your gift wrapping with a personal touch, making keepsakes that will last well beyond 2020.

Brooke will demonstrate various techniques and you will have the opportunity to choose your own colour combinations.

There will be additional materials available for purchase on the day.

Spend the day with this accomplished weaver, learning to craft your very own basket to cart fresh eggs or produce from your kitchen garden.

Spend the afternoon with Brooke Munro from Mr and MRs Munro, learning an introduction to the art of Random Weave Basket Making. 

Random weave basketry is the art of using differing fibres and found objects and weaving them with a structural technique to create an organic form. Brooke will be demonstrating varied techniques and will be hands on when teaching with differing fibres and shapes. Each participant will create a form made from natural and hand dyed rattan cane as well as natural fibres including foraged plantation.

All materials for this workshop are provided.
